Sinkholes??

The Devil’s Sinkhole
(Revised, by Joe Shelton, Commerce Church of Christ)

In 1983 the residents of a Florida apartment building awoke to a terrifying sight outside their windows. The ground beneath the street in front of their building had collapsed, creating a massive sinkhole. Gradually tumbling into the ever-deepening pit were automobiles, sidewalks, and lawn furniture. The apartment building itself was in danger of collapsing into the massive hole. As you might guess, it didn't require much time for the residents to evacuate.

Geologists tell us that sinkholes occur when the forces of erosion drain underground rock and sediment away. When this happens, the crust of the earth no longer has a supporting structure. When the weight of the ground above exceeds the limits of the underneath support, the ground collapses and a sinkhole is formed. When this occurs, anything on the surface quickly disappears - houses, cars, factories, highways, livestock, pets, and sometimes people.

In Rock Springs, Texas, there is a place called The Devil’s Sinkhole. It is so named because it resembles a “bottomless pit.” Looking in, all you will see is 400 feet of utter darkness. At the bottom is a large chamber. Around dusk, millions of bats swarm out of the chamber and up to the surface in an ominous black cloud of beating wings. They frequently resemble a nightmarish twister as they leave to hunt for food.

But there is a different kind of "Devil’s Sinkhole" that is far more ominous. The Devil constantly works to erode the foundations of our faith, commitment, integrity and loyalty to our Lord Jesus Christ. At the same time, he attempts to apply pressure on the surface of our lives with temptations, distractions, obligations, setbacks, illnesses, and anything else he can use. His goal is to gradually bring about a complete collapse of our faith.

Fortunately, we have a far greater Power on our side. God is with us, and He provides the strength necessary to defeat the devil. The ground around us may shake at times, but the God above us is steadier than any rock.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil” (Eph 6:10-11).

A Message From A Song Leader From Years Ago

I TRIED TO LEAD A SONG TONIGHT
(This poem, apparently written by a song leader many years ago, contains a valuable message!)

I tried to lead a song tonight, the best that I was able.
I worked so hard to do it right, and make our praises stable.
I raised my hand as oft before, but no one seemed to look.
I soloed, seemed for half the song, as eyes were glued to books!

I waved my hand in rhythmic style, and put forth my best endeavor
To lead us in our praise of God, and keep our tongues together.
I sang each note, observed each rest, but some were always lagging.
They put my patience to a test, and slowed the song by dragging.

One may not know his do-re-mi's, nor sing with true perception,
But anyone can heed the pleas to follow plain directions.
So watch the man as best you can, who works so hard to lead you,
And help him as leads the songs, because, dear ones, he needs you!

"Your watchmen shall lift up their voices, with their voices they shall sing together... Break forth into joy, sing together..." (Isa 52:8-9)

NO!!!!

WHEN GOD SAYS NO
.
I asked God to say “Yes" to more of my prayers,
And God said, "No."
He said that saying “Yes” to more of my prayers

Might bring more harm than good.

I asked God to take away my weaknesses,
And God said, "No."
He said that my weaknesses keep me humble,

And help me to depend on His grace.

I asked God to take away my pride,
And God said, "No."
He said that pride is not for Him to take away,
It is for me to give up.

I asked God to make my handicapped girl whole,
And God said, "No."
He said that her spirit is already healthy;
Her body is only temporary.

I asked God to grant me patience,
And God said, "No."
He said that patience comes from

Facing trials and setbacks with faith.

I asked God to give me happiness.
And God said, "No."
He said that He gives me daily blessings,

And that happiness results from being thankful.

I asked God to spare me any more pain.
And God said, "No."
He said that pain reminds me that my body is temporary,

And that this world is not my home.

I asked God if He could love me even more,
And God said, "No."
He said that it would be impossible to demonstrate
More love than giving His Son to die for me.

I asked God if I could be more like Him,
And God said, "Yes."
He said to keep reading His word daily,
And keep following in the steps of His Son.
