(Revised, by Joe Shelton, Commerce Church of Christ)
In 1983 the residents of a Florida apartment building awoke to a terrifying sight outside their windows. The ground beneath the street in front of their building had collapsed, creating a massive sinkhole. Gradually tumbling into the ever-deepening pit were automobiles, sidewalks, and lawn furniture. The apartment building itself was in danger of collapsing into the massive hole. As you might guess, it didn't require much time for the residents to evacuate.
Geologists tell us that sinkholes occur when the forces of erosion drain underground rock and sediment away. When this happens, the crust of the earth no longer has a supporting structure. When the weight of the ground above exceeds the limits of the underneath support, the ground collapses and a sinkhole is formed. When this occurs, anything on the surface quickly disappears - houses, cars, factories, highways, livestock, pets, and sometimes people.
In Rock Springs, Texas, there is a place called The Devil’s Sinkhole. It is so named because it resembles a “bottomless pit.” Looking in, all you will see is 400 feet of utter darkness. At the bottom is a large chamber. Around dusk, millions of bats swarm out of the chamber and up to the surface in an ominous black cloud of beating wings. They frequently resemble a nightmarish twister as they leave to hunt for food.
But there is a different kind of "Devil’s Sinkhole" that is far more ominous. The Devil constantly works to erode the foundations of our faith, commitment, integrity and loyalty to our Lord Jesus Christ. At the same time, he attempts to apply pressure on the surface of our lives with temptations, distractions, obligations, setbacks, illnesses, and anything else he can use. His goal is to gradually bring about a complete collapse of our faith.
Fortunately, we have a far greater Power on our side. God is with us, and He provides the strength necessary to defeat the devil. The ground around us may shake at times, but the God above us is steadier than any rock.
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil” (Eph 6:10-11).
Jesus FIRST,
Dennis
