How are You Dressing?

ATTIRE THAT PLEASES GOD

In her book about her famed father, Muhammad Ali, Hana Ali wrote the following. ‘I was wearing a little white tank top and a short black skirt... My father took a good look…. Then, he sat me down on his lap and said… "Hana, everything that God made valuable in the world is covered and hard to get to. Where do you find diamonds? Deep down in the ground, covered… Where do you find pearls? Deep down at the bottom of the ocean, covered up and protected in a beautiful shell. Where do you find gold? Way down in the mine, covered over with layers and layers of rock…." He looked at me with serious eyes. “Your body is sacred. You're far more precious than diamonds and pearls, and you should be covered too."

This is wise council that agrees with God’s word. “…the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation…” (1 Tim. 2:9).

Tragically, society’s tendency to reveal as much flesh as possible occasionally infiltrates the church, especially in summer. Some Christians attempt to justify immodest attire by claiming, “It’s the current fashion", or “Stores sell nothing else", or that such attire “is comfortable".

Regardless, we (even men) need heed 3 vital teachings from God.

1) (As mentioned above) “…women adorn themselves in modest apparel” (1 Tim. 2:9). Modest means “reserved; that which does not draw attention.”

2) "I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matt. 5:27, 28). Since ancient times, certain types of clothing (or the lack of such) have been worn to draw attention to the body - see Prov. 7:10. Since such clothing tends to elicit lust, it also promotes adultery in the heart. That is never a good thing.

3) "Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes” (Matt. 18:7). Although we will give account for our own actions (Rom. 14:12), Jesus stressed that those who cause others to be tempted will be held accountable for doing so (See Rom. 14:13).

May God help us to avoid wearing attire in public that might incite lust or “long looks”. As preachers in the 1950’s frequently stated, "If you’d be embarrassed for Jesus to see you wearing it, put on something else!”

HELP WHEN YOU CAN

One day a wealthy miser was headed home in his limousine when he noticed two men beside the road eating grass. Intrigued, he asked his chauffeur to stop the vehicle, and then got out to investigate. "Why are you eating grass?” he asked. "We have no money for food," one man replied. "But grass is free."  "Tell you what”, the rich man said, “I’ll give you a free ride to my house, and you can have more to eat than you ever dreamed!”

All three entered the limousine, and before long they pulled in front of a huge mansion surrounded by 25 luscious, sprawling acres. The eyes of the poor men lit up, and one exclaimed, “Thank you for bringing us to your incredible estate. How can we ever repay you?”

“Simple”, the rich miser responded. “Eat everything in sight! Our lawn service is on strike, and the grass is nearly a foot high."

Assisting those in need is emphasized throughout the Scriptures.

“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so. Do not say to your neighbor, ‘Go, and come back, and tomorrow I will give it,’ When you have it with you” (Proverbs 3:27-28).

“What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,’ but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead”  (James 2:14-17).

“…whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth”  (1 John 3:17-18).

Although we may not be able to feed, clothe or otherwise assist a multitude, many of us can assist the occasional impoverished individual that we encounter. Although unscrupulous people may try to take advantage of our compassion, God will judge them in the end. Regardless, many people are in genuine need, including, at times, our own brethren. When you hear about or encounter such people, do whatever you can to help….in the name of Jesus Christ.

WHO WILL DO IT?
“…do not forget to do good…for with such sacrifices God is well pleased...” (Heb. 13:16).
“He that knows to do good and does it not to him it is sin.” (James 4:17).

A STORY ABOUT EVERYBODY, SOMEBODY, ANYBODY, & NOBODY.
An important job in the church needed to be done.

Everybody assumed that Somebody would do it.

Although Anybody COULD have done it, Nobody did.

So Somebody got angry, because it was something that Everybody could do!

Then Everybody got upset because Somebody should have done it, but didn’t.

Alas, Anybody could and should have done it, but Nobody ever did.

Because Everybody assumed that Somebody would.

I thank God that many members of the church in Milan are willing to help when assistance is needed. Thus many of the “bases” in the church are typically covered. But are they all? (Dennis will be discussing several “open” bases in upcoming lessons.)
