God's Word still Stands

The Enduring Word of God
(Revised, by John Cumming)

The empire of Caesar is gone; the legions of Rome decay in their graves; the avalanches that Napoleon hurled upon Europe have melted away; the pride of the Pharaohs is fallen; the pyramids they raised as their tombs are sinking in the sand; Tyre is a rock for bleaching fishermen’s nets; Sidon has scarcely left a wreck behind; but the Word of God still survives.

All things that threatened to extinguish it have only aided it; and it proves everyday how transient is the noblest monument that man can build, and how enduring is the least word that God has spoken.

Tradition has dug for it a grave, intolerance has lighted for it many a fire; many a Judas has betrayed it with a kiss; many a Peter has denied it with an oath. Many a Demas has forsaken it, but the word of God still endures.

"The grass withers, the flower fades away: but the word of God shall stand for ever." (Isa. 40:8)

Jesus, always Jesus!

Planning or Boasting?

PLANNING OR BOASTING?
(Adapted, by James “Bo” Rye.)

Are you a PLANNER? I believe that many of us are, as we recognize that planning is necessary to accomplishing our goals. Conversely, are you a BOASTER - someone who brags constantly? Telltale phrases include, "I don't want to brag, but…" or "I hate to toot my own horn, but…"  (Those hearing such words know that some serious boasting is about to commence.) The bottom line is that being a planner is typically positive, but being a boaster is definitely negative.

As Christians, we may tell others about our plans for tomorrow, next week, or beyond. In doing so we usually consider ourselves to be planners, not boasters. Yet in divulging future plans is easy to overlook how LITTLE control we have over the events of tomorrow and beyond. And if we ignore our lack of control and the uncertainty of life, we may actually end up boasting.

Every Christians needs to habitually re-read James 4:13-16. “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit’; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ‘IF THE LORD WILLS, we shall live and do this or that.’ But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.”

If we will remember those words when making or sharing our plans, we will accomplish four wonderful things:
1)     It will remind us of WHO is in charge.
2)     It will remind others about WHO is in charge.
3)     It will demonstrate our faith in GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY.
4)     It may prompt unbelievers to ask what we mean by, “If the Lord wills”, giving us the
opportunity share our faith!

Jesus, always Jesus!

Is VBS Still Worth It?

5 REASONS TO SUPPORT VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

1. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL IS AIMED PRIMARILY AT THOSE WHO ARE THE MOST RECEPTIVE TO GOD’S WORD – CHILDREN.According to a Barna research study, approximately 50% of all those that obey the gospel do so by the age of 15. “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them…”  Mark 10:14.

2. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL IS A GREAT OUTREACH OPPORTUNITY. On average, 25% of the children that attend come from un-churched homes. These kids (and their parents) deserve to hear the gospel of Christ. Vacation Bible School gives them that opportunity. “…faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”  Rom. 10:17.

3. KIDS LOVE VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL. They eagerly anticipate the singing, games, prizes, classes, crafts, snacks and friends. At the same time, they learn more about God’s word, great people of faith (like Noah) and much more. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it”  Prov. 22:6.

4. VBS ALLOWS OUR CHILDREN TO SPEND EXTRA TIME TOGETHER. As our children grow it is vital that they develop close friendships within the church. Their future faithfulness may depend upon such relationships.  “…exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching”  Heb. 10:25.

5. VBS GIVES ADULTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENCOURAGE OUR CHILDREN. Since our children are the FUTURE of the church, it is imperative that we adults provide them with as much attention, encouragement and affection as possible. Countless children have been known to return because one or more adults made him or her feel special!

Please pray daily for our Vacation Bible School, our teachers (& assistants) and for the CHILDREN!

Jesus, always Jesus!
