Beware the Majority

ONE-WAY

"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)

***********************************************************************************

Many of us have heard horror stories about the driving habits of some New Yorkers. One oft-repeated tale is about a man that was pulled over after driving the WRONG WAY on Madison Avenue, one of the busiest one-way streets in the city. When the pursuing officer approached the stopped driver, he asked, “Where do you think you are going?”  The intoxicated driver replied, “Wherever it is, I must be late! Everyone else is coming back."

***********************************************************************************

Apart from the aforementioned example, it's not always wrong to go in the opposite direction of the majority. Jesus said, "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are MANY who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are FEW who find it” (Matt. 7:13-14).

It has been said that the national anthem of hell is, “Everybody’s doing it!” 1 John 5:19 puts it this way, “…the WHOLE WORLD lies under the sway of the wicked one.”

Conversely, a popular t-shirt pictures a solitary fish swimming one way as a school of fish hurry in the opposite direction toward a baited hook. The caption reads, "Smart Fish Go Against the Flow." Spiritually speaking, that is correct. Luke 13:23-24 records, “Then one said to Him, "Lord, are there few who are saved?" And (Jesus) said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for MANY, I say to you, will seek to enter and will NOT be able.”

Although the narrow gate and difficult way are not easy or popular, may we stay on the less-traveled path that leads to eternal life in Heaven.

Jesus, always Jesus!

Pick A Number?

Numerical Guide to Forsaking the Assembly

In Luke 9:57-62 Jesus was offered several excuses as to why some could not immediately follow Him, such as attending a funeral or saying farewell to family. Similarly, certain excuses are frequently given as to why some Christians fail to attend worship or other church services. Below are 16 excuses I have heard over the years:

1. “I was too tired.”
2. “I stayed up too late on Saturday.”
3. “I didn’t hear the alarm.”
4. “I didn’t sleep well.”
5. “Our clothes were dirty.”
6. “Our hot water heater went out.”
7. “We had company from out of town.”
8. “My dog was sick.”
9. “Something came up.”
10. “The kids were playing baseball, soccer, etc.”
11. “We were packing for a vacation.”
12. “We returned from a vacation.”
13. “It was a holiday.”
14. “I had to mop the floor.” (Yes, someone once told me that!)
15. “I had to mow the lawn.” (Someone told me that, too!)
16. “A family member was sick, so we all stayed home.”

I have a novel idea. Since the above list likely contains 98% of the excuses cited by church members, the next time you are absent, save your breath. If asked the reason for your absence, just pick the number that best describes your excuse. You can do away with a lengthy explanation by simply saying, “#4, primarily due to #2.”
By the way, I left out excuse #17 - “I just didn’t put God first!” (Strange, I've never heard anyone honest enough to use that one!)

“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Heb 10:24-25)

Jesus, always Jesus!

Whose Job Is It ???

WHOSE JOB???

“…do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.”  (Heb. 13:16)

A STORY ABOUT FOUR PEOPLE NAMED EVERYBODY, SOMEBODY, ANYBODY, AND NOBODY.

There was an important job to be done, and Everybody was certain that Somebody would do it.

Although Anybody could have done it, Nobody did.

So Somebody got angry, because it was Everybody’s job.

Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody would not do it.

Ultimately Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

***********************************************************************************************
“What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:14-17)

“He that knows to do good and does it not to him it is sin.”  (James 4:17)

Jesus, always Jesus!
