Click here toGOD'S WINGSYears ago, National Geographic featured a story about a remarkable discovery in Yellowstone National Park. Following a forest fire, rangers began trekking up a mountain to evaluate the damage. Presently, a ranger noticed an eerie sight - a large bird literally petrified in ashes, perched close to the ground. Somewhat alarmed by the unusual sight, He reached out with a stick to touch the bird. As he did so, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother’s wings. The ranger immediately realized what had occurred. The devoted mother, aware of impending disaster, realized that her chicks could not escape the approaching fire. Although she could have flown away to safety, she knew that her offspring had one chance of survival – to hide under her wings. So she gathered them beneath her wings and stood her ground, even as the fire began engulfing her. Although she was scorched to death in moments, the chicks were protected. She was willing to die so that those under her wings could live.
This poignantly illustrates two significant Bible truths.
1) God’s willingness to shield His own beneath His protective wings. “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust… He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you.” [Psa. 91:1-7]
2) Jesus’ willingness to forfeit His life for our eternal survival. “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. [Rom. 5:6-9]
Praise God for His wings, and Jesus for His love!
