Genuine Assurance

Genuine Assurance

We are inundated daily with promises and assurances in advertising and sales. “We guarantee… pledge… warrant... promise… assure..."and so it goes. Of course the fine print frequently limits or diminishes such assurances. Unfortunately many people buy, invest or commit without first perusing the limitations and exclusions. They frequently find out too late that the promises are essentially empty.

Isn’t it wonderful to know that a genuine source of assurance is available – Jesus Christ. The apostle John wrote, “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 Jn. 5:13). Jesus Christ is indeed the source of absolute confidence to all who believe in Him and submit to His word.

Such assurance is firmly planted in the word of truth, not the pseudo-confidence common in the religious world today. Genuine confidence does not result from subjective feelings, a “better-felt-than-told" emotional encounter or something passed down from parents. It is based on the good news revealed in the pages of God’s word. Peter wrote, “Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and abiding word of God” (1 Pet. 1:22-23). No one, including the devil, can defeat a confidence based on the truths of the Bible. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words shall not pass away” (Mt. 24:35).

Build your hope on the solid rock of God’s word, not feelings or emotions. Read, heed and obey. The apostle Paul declared that penitent believers get INTO Christ when they are united with Him in baptism (Rom. 6:3-4). He subsequently added, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are IN Christ Jesus” (Rom. 8:1). Now that's something about which to get excited. Blessed assurance!

Jesus, always Jesus!
