BAKERS ARE IMPORTANT, TOO

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might…” (Eccles. 9:10)

Most of us are familiar with prominent Bible characters that served God in exceptional ways. Abraham, Noah, Moses, Elijah, Samuel, David, John the Baptist, Peter and Paul are just a few examples of exemplary servants.

Speaking of God’s servants, does the name Mattithiah ring a bell? Unless you are a dedicated Bible student, you may be unfamiliar with this name. That’s a shame, because Mattithiah is mentioned repeatedly in 1 Chronicles, along with other Old Testament books.

Who was Mattithiah? 1 Chronicles 9:31 states, "Mattithiah of the Levites, the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, had the trusted office over the things that were baked in the pans.”

Mattithiah was a baker. Although he never commanded an army, won a battle, slew a giant, performed a miracle or preached to multitudes, he was a baker in the service of Jehovah. "So what?” you may say. Consider this – of the millions of Jews that lived in Old Testament times, only a tiny fraction are mentioned by name. Mattithiah was one of the select few. Although his service might seem trivial, God esteemed him highly enough to repeatedly mention his name in the Bible.

This serves as an invaluable lesson for us all. Some Christians mistakenly feel that they are relatively unimportant unless they are serving God in some "great" way. But it is not our job or title that makes us stand out before God. It is how dedicated we are to doing our best for His glory.

So strive to glorify and please God, regardless of your role. Whether you are a CEO or a custodian, a preacher or an usher, a vice president or secretary, a teacher or a general volunteer, give God your very best. Believe me - he notices, and He will reward you!

“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus…” (Col. 3:17)

Jesus, always Jesus!
